Disc Golf Basics — Learn the Core Rules of Play

Introduce new players to the official PDGA rule fundamentals without jargon. Focus on scoring, throwing order, lies, penalties, and safety.

The Objective

Like traditional golf, the goal is to finish each hole in the fewest throws possible.

Core Rules

  • Every throw counts as one stroke — no mulligans in official play
  • Lowest total score wins — count all strokes and penalties
  • Play from tee to basket — complete each hole in order

Starting the Hole

Each hole begins from a marked tee area.

Tee Rules

  • All players throw their first shot from behind the tee line — don't step past the line
  • The player with the lowest previous hole score (or first on the card) tees off first — maintain order
  • Wait for the fairway to clear — safety first

Order of Play

After all drives, the farthest from the basket throws next ("away player").

Throwing Order

  • Continue until all players hole out — maintain order throughout the hole
  • Maintain silence and stillness during throws — respect other players
  • The farthest player always throws next — this keeps the game fair

Marking the Lie

A player's lie is the spot where their disc landed in bounds.

Lie Rules

  • Place a mini marker disc on the ground directly in front of the disc — mark your lie
  • The next throw must be made with one supporting point behind the mini — stay behind the marker
  • If your disc lands in a bush or tree, mark directly below it — no repositioning advantage

Scoring

Understanding scoring terms helps you track your progress.

Scoring Terms

Term Meaning
Par Expected strokes for a hole
Birdie (-1) One under par
Eagle (-2) Two under par
Bogey (+1) One over par

Keep score via scorecard, phone app, or voice agreement after each hole.

Out of Bounds (OB)

OB lines are marked by roads, water, or ropes.

OB Rules

  • If your disc lands OB: Take one penalty stroke
  • Throw from your previous lie or a drop zone, if marked
  • Always confirm OB lines during tournament play — ask if unsure

Casual Relief and Obstacles

Sometimes you need relief from obstacles or hazards.

Relief Rules

  • You may move your lie up to 1 meter from casual obstacles (mud, puddle, poison ivy)
  • If a disc rests under a structure (bench, basket), extend your lie back on line-of-play
  • Don't move obstacles — only adjust your lie position

Courtesy and Conduct

Good conduct makes the game enjoyable for everyone.

Conduct Rules

  • Be ready when it's your turn — keep the pace moving
  • Stay quiet and still during others' throws — respect concentration
  • Don't litter or damage course property — leave it better than you found it
  • Yell "Fore!" immediately if your disc may hit someone — safety first
Important: Repeated violations can lead to penalty strokes or disqualification in PDGA events.

Safety and Common Sense

Safety should always be your top priority.

Safety Rules

  • Always ensure the fairway is clear — wait for players ahead to finish
  • Wait until players ahead have finished — don't rush or throw into groups
  • Avoid throwing during lightning or high wind events — use common sense
  • Treat other park users with respect — disc golf often shares space
